After IS destroying ancient sculptures in the Mosul Museum, cleverly videotaping everything and uploading the demolition online for the world to share and condemn, without reflecting over the fact that we are all a part of IS propaganda machine, without actually putting the means in to stop them, a different kind of response came from Sweden.
The Swedish journalist Somar Al Naher published a photo of her mother who is from Iraq, when she visited Mosul Museum together with a group of girls 43 years ago, with a comment from Somar. Somar gave me the permission to publish this photo and her comment on Sweden and the Middle East Views. Here is what she had to say (translation from Swedish, Sweden and the Middle East Views):
“I have to tell this story and why this is an endless sorrow. This photo was taken exactly 43 years ago outside the Mosul Museum that is now destroyed. In the picture you can see my mom, she is in the middle of the back row, number five from the left. In front of her sits her younger sister. What we see in the picture are girls on a Scout camp. Each summer a number of girls were chosen from schools in Karbala and Najaf, to go on a camp in a new city in Iraq. Several girls come from deeply religious families, some of them had parents who were illiterate. But the trust and the confidence made the families allow their daughters to go on camps in places that were far away from home.
This picture symbolises everything that is about to be destroyed in Iraq: the people, the shared history, the proud heritage but also the development and the future. The girls of this generation would have had the possibility to change the world.”

Destroying Mosul’s Heritage:
We apologize for not updating the page. Like most Iraqis, we have been mourning the unbearable loss of our precious relics. Once again, many unrealistic voices have been asking why the inhabitants of Mosul did nothing to stop the rampage, and once again we will say if stopping the destruction and oppression without arms were possible, 5 million Jews would not have been killed systematically during the Holocaust. There was an average of 10,000 Jews in every concentration camp vs. 50 Nazis. If freeing themselves and fighting back, with their bare hands like many are asking the people of Mosul, were an option, they would have. As for the pythons calling for a nuclear or chemical attack on Mosul, we will ask them to look in the mirror and seek the reason for all the hatred they carry inside. It is beyond shameful that Mosul receives prayers and wishful thoughts from non-Iraqis world-wide whereas Iraqis are calling for genocide of the hostage people of Mosul.
Some notes about the destruction:
1- The footage seen in the video published by ISIS dates back to July-August 2014 and NOT February 2015. We had noted in a previous news brief last August that ISIS had destroyed the Winged Bull at the entrance of “Nirgal Gate” as well as the statues in Mosul’s Museum. We must ask ourselves why ISIS chose this specific date to post the video.
2- 90% of the statues in the museum are indeed not authentic, but rather gypsum versions of the originals which have been moved to Baghdad gradually since April 2003. However, the Winged Bull is authentic. Another important note worth mentioning is the “Yellow Obelisk” of Assyrian King Esarhaddon, and many and many authentic tablets are missing from the video footage. Our inquiries with the Museum’s employees conclude that these pieces were taken out of the Museum since early July following the detaining of the Museum’s manager (Musa’ab Mohammed Jasim) whom we have mentioned in a previous post. The manager was detained after ISIS took over the city in order to identify the exact value of the ancient artefacts. He was released later. Museum administrive Dr. Muntaha also claims the museum is no longer of any value apart from the yellow obelisk and ISIS. The obelisk vanished from the Museum on February 25th one day after German experts in Mosul evaluated its worth. How the German experts entered the city and managed to secure ISIS protection remains a mystery. However, we must wonder if the pro-ISIS propaganda made by German reporter Jurgen Todenhofer last December was part of the bargain. This should be material for a worldwide investigation as to how these Germans accessed the city under ISIS protection. Where are the journalists?
3- Sources tell us ISIS is excavating the areas around monumental sites in Mosul in search of relics, particularly around the location of Jonah’s tomb (previously). Witnesses say ISIS militiamen would spend hours in the site after sunset.
4- ISIS have destroyed 10% of the artefacts they possess. The remaining relics in Nimrod and Hatra are priceless.
5- Further investigations have led to facts that several ancient pieces from Syria and Iraq have been shipped to Turkey through shipping cars that do not belong to ISIS, but to international shipping companies. We have enough evidence to believe that business and trade is continuing between ISIS and Kurdistan & Baghdad.
6- Ancient Syriac, Arabic, and Latin manuscripts preserved in Mosul’s churches have been confiscated by ISIS months ago. These rare scripts constitute a treasure of Christian heritage. Plans are being made to sell them to antique dealers.
7- Two men who appeared in the video of ISIS destroying the relics have been identified. They shall be punished.
8- Final Note: Mosul Eye only posts updates that are well-worth noting. Even if you decide not to believe our news, please take it into serious consideration. We do not collect news for the sake of entertainment or merely reading. Several satellite channels do that. What we offer is by far more than that. We are conveying updates to those whom in concerns and are risking our lives every minute while doing so.
ملاحظات حول فيديو تحطيم داعش للاثار الاشورية في الموصل :
نعتذر عن هذا الغياب في نشر الاخبار فقد كنا ننعى تراثنا كمعظم العراقيين. مرة اخرى تعلو بعض الاصوات غير الواقعية التي تطالب اهل الموصل بمقاومة داعش بايادهم والاستعداد “للموت” من اجل الحرية، ومرة أخرى نقول لكم: لو ان التحرر من دون سلاح من ايدي الدمار والخراب والكراهية والاجرام هو بالأمر الممكن، لما قتل خمس ملايين يهودي اوروبي في المحرقة. إن عدد اليهود في معسكرات الاعتقال النازية كان يتجاوز عشرات الالاف في ، المعسكر الواحد مقابل مائة نازي مسلح
ولو كانت التحرير بالايادي المجردة ممكناً لححروا انفسهم. امثلة اخيرة تطبق ايضا…مثلا…لم لمْ يقاوم 1700 شاب من جنودنا 20 داعشياً في قاعدة سبايكر؟ اما بالنسبة لبعض الافاعي غير السامة، التي لا تلدغ ولا تغني ولا تسمن من جوع، والتي تطالب بقصف الموصل بالاسلحة الكيمياوية والنووية فلن نقول لهم سوى التالي: استغرقوا في النظر الى المرآة قليلاً وحاولوا التعرف على مصدر كم الحقد والكره الذي يملأ صدوركم. انه لعار كبير ان نتلقى الدعاء من غير العراقيين من مختلف انحاء العالم بينما اخوتنا في الوطن يدعون لابادتنا جميعاً.
1- عملية التحطيم تمت بين شهر يوليو واغسطس 2014
نشرت عين الموصل في شهر اغسطس 2014 خبر يفيد بان داعش قامت بتحطيم الثور المجنح بالمعاول اضافة الى موجودات قاعة الحضر في متحف الموصل لكن احدا لم يلتفت الى الخبر او يعطيه اي اهتمام، وهذه اشارة اولى على ان العملية تمت في تلك الفترة وليس حديثا.
ما يدفعنا للقول ان لدى داعش هدف واضح من وراء التوقيت الذي نشرت فيه فيديو التحطيم.
2- ان 90% من التماثيل الموجودة داخل المتحف هي تماثيل جبسية نسخة غير اصلية عن التماثيل الحقيقية، باستثناء النسخة الاصلية (غير الوحيدة) للثور المجنح، ولم تظهر في الفيديو “المسلة الصفراء للملك اسرحدون” اضافة الى رقم طينية ولوحات أصلية، اثبتت التحريات من خلال شهادات تم جمعها من موظفي المتحف انها تم اخراجها في بداية شهر July بعد اعتقال مدير دائرة الاثار “مصعب محمد جاسم” والذي أوردت ايضا معلومات عنه سابقا في الصفحة، تم اعتقاله بعد دخول داعش للموصل لتحديد القيمة الحقيقية للاثار الموجودة داخل الموصل وتم الافراج عنه لاحقا، اضافة الى مسؤولة المتحف الدكتورة منتهى التي اعلنت ان المتحف لم يتبقَ فيه شيء ذا قيمة سوى المسلة الصفراء وان داعش اغلقت المتحف نهائيا ومنعت اي احد من الوصول اليه، لكن هذه المسلة التي بقيت المعلومات عنها غامضة اتضح انها عرضت على خبراء أثار المان لتحديد قيمتها الفعلية، في اليوم التالي لوصول الخبراء الالمان للمتحف اي يوم 25 فبراير 2015 اختفت المسلة من المتحف، وفي يوم 26 فبراير عرضت داعش فيديو تحطيم التماثيل.
3- وردت معلومات بخصوص قيام داعش بتنقيبات اثارية داخل مجمع المنطقة الآثارية في الموصل وتحت بناية مشهد النبي يونس، ذكرت شهادات لبعض الناس حول هذه العملية ان داعش كانت تقضي اوقات طويلة في تلك المنطقة مع معدات الية ومعاول وادوات حفر كانت غالبا في الليل.
4 – نسبة ما حطمته داعش لا يساوى 10% من الموجودات الفعلية للاثار بيدها، اثار مدينة النمرود والتماثيل والاختام والرقم الطينية التي استحوذت عليها تعادل ثروة لا تعد ولا تحصى.
5- اشارت معلومات استخباراتية قمنا بالتحري والتحقيق عنها ان في اوائل فبراير الحالي تمت عملية نقل لمجموعة من الاثار العراقية والسورية وشحنها الى تركيا عبر سيارات شحن ليست تابعة لداعش وانما من خلال شركات شحن دولي، ويجدر الاشارة هنا ان شركات الشحن لاتزال نشطة في الموصل وخاصة عبر تركيا وسوريا وحتى كردستان، تحرياتنا تشير الى وجود تبادل تجاري مستمر بين داعش وكردستان وبغداد.
6 – في شهر سبتمبر تم التأكد من قيام داعش ببيع لوحات فنية شهيرة تابعة لرسام موصلي عالمي تقدر اسعارها بمئات الاف الدولارات بيعت الى كردستان.
7 – المخطوطات السريانية والعربية واللاتينية الموجودة في كنائس الموصل تم التحفظ عليها من قبل داعش قبل عدة اشهروهي مخطوطات لم يعرفها العالم بعد، خاصة تلك الموجودة في كنيسة الساعة في الموصل وكنيسة الطاهرة، اضافة الى مكتبات كبيرة جدا تحتوي كنوز من التراث المسيحي، كلها الان بحوزة داعش وهناك صفقة تجارية تجري حاليا لبيع هذه المخطوطات لتجار اثار ومسروقات.
8 – رغم ان داعش حطمت الاثار القيمة جدا في الموصل، الا ان نسبة 90% من الموجودات الفعلية للاثار نقلت الى بغداد قبل سنوات، بعضها نقلت قبل عام 2003 والبعض الاخر نقل الى بغداد عام 2011 اذ تم نقل 2022 قطة اثرية الى مخازن بغداد للحفاظ عليها هناك.
9 – تم التعرف على اثنين من الذين ظهروا في فيديو التحطيم وسنضمن ان تتم محاسبتهم وملاحقتهم.
10 – ما انتشر حول تدمير بوابة نركال هو محض اشاعات لا مكان لها من الصحة، البوابة قائمة وسليمة وهي تقع اساسا ضمن مربع امني لداعش تتحصن فيه.
11 – هناك صفقة كبرى لبيع وتهريب اثار الموصل وسوريا الى خارج العراق، الادلة والتحريات تفيد بان هذه الاثار موجودة حاليا داخل الموصل وان تسريبها يجري بشكل بطيء ووجهتها القادمة ستكون تركيا.
12- ملاحظة أخيرة : حين تنشر عين الموصل معلومات كهذه خذوها على محمل الجد، لانها نتيجة تحريات وبحث دقيق، حتى لو لم تصدقوها خذوها بعين الاعتبار ولا تهملوها، ان عين الموصل لا تقدم المعلومات لغرض قراءتها فقط، فهناك فضائيات كثيرة يمكنها ان تقدم معلومات، لكن ما نقوم به ابعد من مجرد نقل المعلومة، نحن نعطي معلومات لمن يهمه الأمر والثمن هو حياتنا التي قد تنتهي في اية لحظة على يد داعش.

Maybe it was mostly just a part of ISIS propaganda? They seem to be be battling a battle with themselves sometimes on who can and how to perform the most gruesome acts. I do think we should, however, be careful to be certain everything on the page is true, considering it’s written anonymously, and we don’t know if the person writing it actually is in Mosul. It is someone stating to be so, anyhow, and his/her words are important to listen to and reflect over. So thanks again for sharing.

You’re right, Claire. But I also think it’s important to acknowledge the Iraqi government’s inability to contain IS or include minorities in their reign… it’s all very sad.
